Chapter Nine

Emmerich woke up warm, fuzzily registering the glow of a healing cage around him. Everything was muffled and distant, though he could feel the pain lingering beneath the fuzziness. He was warm and safe, though, and he could see Pearce sitting nearby, bent over a book, and that was enough to let him fall back asleep without any hesitation.

When he woke at some point later, things were less fuzzy, though the healing cage was still set up around him. Emmerich groaned, reaching out to touch the spell. It flared a sickly yellow-orange, which was... not surprising, exactly, but Emmerich had hoped he'd be doing better than that. Something in the yellow, or yellow-green spectrum.

"Don't move too much, you'll disrupt it," Rylan said, as though Emmerich was an idiot and didn't know how healing spells worked.

"I'm not," Emmerich muttered. He peered past the glow of the cage, registering that he was in the room he'd been sharing with Pearce before everything had gone to hell. Pearce wasn't there. Rylan was sitting in the seat he remembered Pearce sitting in earlier, his feet propped up on the edge of the bed, just shy of where the healing cage ended. "Can I sit up?"

"Sure," Rylan said, shrugging. He swung his feet down and stood, moving to help Emmerich sit up inside the cage. It had to be Rylan's spell, as he waved a hand at it, making it expand upward to accommodate Emmerich sitting up. Emmerich winced at a few of the aches and pains that flared to life as he moved, wishing he could have slept until he was wholly healed. "How are you feeling?"

"Better," Emmerich said, pressing his hand to his ribs. They felt tender under the careful pressure he applied, but nowhere near as bad as they'd been when the draughts had run out shortly after he, Katari, and Pontacia had reached the wall. "What happened?"

"What do you mean?" Rylan asked. He stepped away from the bed, moving to the little table where a tray rested. He poured a cup of tea, bringing it back to Emmerich.

"I remember getting here, but not much else past that," Emmerich said. He took the cup from Rylan, pleased when his hands didn't shake much. The scent of the tea, fresh and minty, warmed him inside and out. The familiar smell reinforced that he was safe, and Emmerich inhaled deeply.

"Oh," Rylan said, smiling faintly. "Not much has happened, yet. I know you told Pearce something that my father couldn't hear, and you said you didn't have anything that needed telling before you rested and healed some."

Emmerich frowned. He remembered Mayson's office, fuzzily. He must have told Pearce about the elves knowing he could access the node; that was the only thing he could think of that was important. As much as Whisperlief and Odilon had pressed, they hadn't gotten anything from him. They'd pushed too hard trying to get answers most of the time, as though they were used to interrogating hardier people, and Emmerich had kept passing out before they could get anything from him.
